2008 LIFE in the South

The Val Skinner Foundation’s passionate fight against breast cancer has grown to include a second LIFE Series event at the renowned Haig Point Golf Club on Daufuskie Island in Hilton Head, South Carolina on Sept. 22. The event, LIFE in the South, will keep many of the same traditions as the flagship LIFE event and will generate $500,000 for breast cancer programs in South Carolina.

The first annual LIFE in the South event will feature LPGA Hall of Fame members, Nancy Lopez and Beth Daniel, with two-time U.S. Open Champion Meg Mallon, and top-ranked players Brittany Lincicome, Rachel Hetherington, Sherri Steinhauer, Helen Alfredsson, Kelli Kuehne, Laura Diaz and Stacy Prammanasudh, among others.

Proceeds from LIFE in the South will be distributed in South Carolina through educational and awareness programs focused on young women. Some donations from LIFE in the South will fund the implementation of a high school biology program for 2009 that teaches genetics using breast cancer as its focus. In the eight-lesson curriculum of the Tox Rap program, students learn how cancer develops, how to identify risk factors, and how to investigate ways to reduce cancer risk. Teachers from participating South Carolina high schools will be trained to teach this program.

Also funded by LIFE in the South, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which partners with the Val Skinner Foundation, will bring its Komen On The Go™ mobile tour to South Carolina and southeast Georgia colleges and universities. The national tour visits hundreds of college campuses and community events throughout the United States, encouraging women to learn more about breast health and make a commitment to practical everyday health habits that could save their lives.

After golf, participants will attend a reception honoring LIFE Heroes who serve as inspiration and motivation for the fight against breast cancer.

The $500,000 raised by LIFE in the South will match the LIFE Event’s $500,000 donation, for the first annual $1 million LIFE donation for the fight to eradicate breast cancer.
